Alpine Ski Racing Stories 1: Bollnäs, Sweden
Since this site gets quite a lot of visitors, I thought it would be nice to share some stories related with alpine ski racing that are not the typical and may take you take to places you probably never heard of so here comes the first one of hopefully many.
Back in February 2021 I had just moved from Frankfurt, Germany to Copenhagen, Denmark to start a new job. It was a cold month, there was snow all over the southern Scandinavian capital, but travelling was a huge headache and I don't think I need to explain why.
A Swedish friend told me that the entry to Sweden was allowed for sportsmen and I decided to give it a shot so I searched for a race in a place that was within an almost decent driving distance.
The place was Bollnäs. Bollnäs is a charming town located in the heart of Sweden, 3 hours north of Stockholm, known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and friendly locals. I can really underline the last part since Jorgen and the rest of the team were super helpful in guiding me to get to TCM and everything.
I stayed in the Bollnas Grand Hotel, a nice hotel that seemed to have had better times as the last renovation had been made several years ago. Breakfast was good and the ski prep room was the bathroom so all in all cannot complain.
The races were quite terrible to be honest, at that point I had not been on skis for one year, the gyms were closed in Denmark and although I kept running miracles don't happen but I really enjoyed the race since being an ENL race meant being able to give it full gas all the way without having to account for much of a strategy.
I was super happy on Sunday after the race since after 11 months and 15 of not being on skis the dry spill was over.
I knew I would come back and in 2022 and 2024 I was back in Bollnäs
