Alpine Ski Racing Stories 2: Hassela, Sweden
We all have a resort we like, a happy place that brings good memories and where for some reasons things seem to work.
February is my favorite month for skiing, it feels like real winter but there is way lighter than in the prior months. Hassela is a place I had never heard of but in January 2022 I spent some days training with 10K in Funasdalen with Jonas (sending regards in case you read this) and his team.
Hedvig, one of the racers, mentioned that Hassela is a normally a good race to score points since it is a lot about gliding, and it has a long flat section at the start and another one at the bottom. It did not take much to convince me to try to go there and try my luck.
Hassela is a tiny town, between Sundsvall and Hudiksvall in the east of Sweden, home to (or very close) Andre Myhrer, a world cup legend who won the 2018 Gold medal in the Olympic games.
The race day was one of days that really seem taken from a movie, blue skis, cold, there was a tiny bit of fresh snow that had fallen overnight and made the brightness level simply amazing. The environment did not disappoint and my skiing was at par with the conditions, I managed to deliver four solid GS runs across the weekend and went home with my best GS points ever.
To celebrate I went to the local pizza place and tried to get my favorite Pizza, a quattro formaggi pizza and in the menu I saw a pizza called "quattro". I did not read much further as the board was in Swedish and I was very hungry so I went for it. It turned to be a terrible pizza with Tuna, some weird veggies and other stuff... The worst part is that in 2023 I did the exact same mistake. Wish me luck for next time
